Posted January 17, 2019 07:02:58A new generation of glass-covered table lamps is making home-buyers and homeowners alike flinch.
It’s the latest technology to make glass appear less intimidating than it actually is.
Glass-based lamp manufacturers like Lark have been able to offer lamps that look more like they belong in a movie theater, say, or a movie house.
But the new technology, which was first spotted in a commercial, has not made the traditional glass-filled lamps of the past look so chic.
And while the technology has caught on with people who like to watch TV, they’re still largely unfamiliar with how it works.
It takes about a minute to fill a glass table lamp with a few inches of water, says Mark Lark, founder of Lark Design.
And, Lark says, it takes only a few minutes to turn a table lamp on and off.
The table lamp also can be placed anywhere, and you can change the color of the water used to make the lamp, as long as it’s not black or gray.
So far, Larks has sold more than 100 lamps in just three states, according to Lark.
The new lamps are made of a glass that’s glass-like, he says, but with a water-repellent coating.
This makes them hard to break when you pour water on them, he adds.
There are two types of glass used for Lark’s lamps, but the most popular type is a ceramic type.
These are used in most modern home lighting systems, including the Philips Hue light-up lights, the Microsoft Hue light bulbs, the Panasonic Lumens, and even the Samsung Smart Home products.
Lark describes the ceramic type of glass as a “very nice, lightweight material.”
He says the material is easy to work with, but “it’s very brittle, so you can only get it as close as you can get to the glass.”
That means you can’t pour the water in the glass onto a lamp with the same strength as you could with a regular glass.
The ceramic is harder to break than the glass and is better for light-colored lamps, he explains.
The other type of plastic used for table lamps are plasticized glass that Lark calls “pigments.”
Pigments are the type that you might use in a bathroom mirror or in your bathroom sink, Lask says.
Plastic pigments are easier to work and hold up to light.
But because they have a slightly darker color, they don’t last as long.
Larks lamps are “very durable,” he says.
The first one he made had a capacity of about 20 watts, which would normally be sufficient for a small home, he said.
“So I built one with a couple of extra bulbs.”
But because the lamps don’t need to be constantly lit to keep them working, they cost about $50 to make.
And they don, too.
He says they’re also “pretty cheap,” at about $15 to $20 each.
LARK is making about 70 of the lamps, and he’s also sold a few thousand.
“I think it’s a good market,” Lark said.
Larkin, who is the chief engineer of Larks manufacturing company, says he was inspired by a man named John W. Johnson who owned a home that featured a wood-burning stove.
Johnson, who died in 2017, used a “brick fireplace” to cook his family’s Thanksgiving dinner on the fire pit, and the family would stand at the edge of the fire and watch the fire burn.
Johnson wanted his fireplace to look as though it were on fire.
So he built a wooden table lamp, with a thin sheet of glass that held the stove in place, Johnson told The Washington Post.
“It was almost like he was holding it up as a trophy,” Larkin says.
Laker says that Johnson “had a pretty unique vision” of what he wanted his table lamp to look like.
He made a glass-repelling coating to make it look like a ceramic, he added.
The coating, made from a material called “glass glaze,” is much thinner than a typical ceramic coating.
That means that the coating absorbs the heat of the flame, and it doesn’t burn the glass.
It also doesn’t affect the color and brightness of the light.
And it’s easy to apply, says Laker.
You just spray the coating onto the glass, then add water.
The lamps will last for up to three years, and they can be installed with either a regular wooden or wooden frame.
Lask is looking for more customers to test the new lamps, so he’s considering offering them in other countries.
“We’re in discussions with a lot of other countries,” he said, “and we’re looking for people who are interested in the technology.”
